The BOC’s objects are to advance education in the subject of ornithology for the benefit of the public by promoting scientific discussion between members and others interested in ornithology and to facilitate the dissemination of scientific information concerned with ornithology, and in particular avian systematics, taxonomy and distribution.
The BOC produces a Bulletin four times a year. Up to the end of 2016 hard copies have been sent to all members. However, from 2017 the Bulletin will become an open access online-only publication. The contents of the most recent Bulletin, as well as earlier issues, can be viewed here.
The Club’s application to become a Charitable Incorporated Organisation has been approved by the Charity Commission and the new BOC and constitution have now formally been endorsed. From early 2017 the BOC will cease having a membership fee. We will become an online organisation without a paying membership. We hope very much however that members currently paying by standing order will switch their fee of £25.00 to the new bank account (to be advised together with details about setting up a revised Gift Aid mandate) and continue their connection with the club as a Friend of the BOC. If you pay by cheque we hope also that you might change to a standing order and become a Friend.
Friends will receive regular updates of the Club’s activities, invitations to the Barley Mow events and to the Annual Conference and Review Meeting; they will also receive advance notices of forth coming Bulletins and ad hoc publications.
The income from Friends will be used to support and develop the work of the Club.
The BOC holds regular meetings, mostly in central London (see the Meetings page for location and directions). The meetings are normally free and non-members are welcome.
One-day conference now on-line
The BOC held a joint one day meeting with the Neotropical Bird Club and the Natural History Museum at the museum in London on 17 September 2016. Videos of the presentations can now be watched using the following link (via the NBC website): conference videos
